Did you know?

Many YMCA’s often hire their Leaders Club teens as sports instructors, swim instructors, lifeguards, camp counselors and childcare staff. Some even end up as YMCA Professionals in Aquatics, Sports & Recreation, Camping, Childcare and other positions!

The Leaders Club Environment

Leaders Club is a welcoming, judgement-free environment that emphasizes positive peer relationships, provides hands-on learning experiences, and fosters growth through the YMCA’s Core Values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility. To this aim most clubs have the following ground rules.

  • One Mic – One person speaks at a time
  • Accept & Respect Others, their rights & opinions
  • Avoid Put Downs
  • Confidentiality
  • Option to Pass
  • Expect & Accept Unfinished Business
  • Speak for Yourself
  • You’re Responsible for Your Own Learning
  • Leaders Clubs are staffed by adult YMCA staff . It is a best practice at all YMCA’s to screen staff and volunteers through background checks and provide training in positive youth development principles and techniques.

The advisors help facilitate the program with club members, provide opportunities and training, and also chaperone teens on volunteer service trips, regional events such as rallies, and other club related activities.

Time & Commitment

Being a member of the Leaders Club requires commitment. Teens are expected to attend club meetings and activities, as well as volunteer at their Y or in the community. A key part of the program is that members take an active role in planning and leading club activities. Like many youth programs, the more time, effort, and energy a teen invests in Leaders Club, the more they will gain from the experience.

Meeting times, club activities, and other commitments may vary by location. We encourage families to speak with their local YMCA Leaders Club advisor to understand the expectations of their specific program.

SPECIAL EVENTS

Camp Fitch YMCA Polar Bear Plunge

Cost should never be the reason a child cannot attend Camp Fitch YMCA. To turn that mission into reality, Camp Fitch has hosted their annual Polar Bear Plunge for the last 15 years! Staff, alumni, campers, and anyone else who wants to join the cause jump into the icy waters of Lake Erie with the same purpose: to give the life-changing opportunity of camp to kids who would otherwise be unable to afford. All are welcome to join the fun (without any pressure to jump in Lake Erie)! We will have food, games, and raffles for everyone to participate in.

Davis Family YMCA Golf Outing

The Davis Family YMCA is committed to strengthening the foundations of our community. For 13 years we have hosted the annual golf outing, raising funds to ensure that YMCA programs and membership opportunities are accessible for all, regardless of financial means. Whether you’re a seasoned golfer or trying it for the first time, this event is a hole-in-one for fun, fellowship, and community impact! Swing by for a day of golf, great company, and the chance to support the charitable work of the YMCA of Youngstown.

Central YMCA Gala

Join us for the First Annual Central Gala, where we’ll come together to celebrate the impact we’re making in our community. The theme for this year’s event, A Better Future Starts with You, will highlight the YMCA’s ongoing mission to strengthen our community through programs that promote healthy living, youth development, and social responsibility. The event will take place on September 25, 2025, from 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM at the Maronite Center. Please wear your semi-formal evening attire that reflects the elegance of the occasion and the spirit of connection we nurture at the Y. This is a chance to make a lasting difference while enjoying an evening filled with hope, impact, and inspiration. We look forward to sharing this experience with you!
