YMCA of Youngstown

Swim Lessons

The YMCA has been teaching swim lessons for over 100 years. Although many other agencies and organizations offer swim lessons, the difference is this: The Y uses programs as a vehicle to deliver its mission, which is to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build a healthy spirit, mind, and body for all. The YMCA swim lesson program is designed to ensure students’ safety, provide students with regular, progressive success, and make the learning process enjoyable.

The YMCA Swim Lesson program uses a lot of group practice, which gives participants more swim time (and less time waiting for a turn). Our program also includes a lot of games and activities, which have been designed to allow students to practice the skills they are learning while having fun at the same time. Swim lessons at the Y are available for ages 6 months through adults (children under the age of 3 must have a parent or guardian in the water with them during class). To find out which class is most appropriate for you or your child, please take a closer look at the Stage Descriptions, Lesson Selector, and Swimming Skills documents below.

Private & Semi-Private Swim Lessons

In addition to group lessons, we offer private and semi-private swim lessons. These lessons are ideal for participants who need more one-on-one support or have a specific goal they’d like to accomplish.

Lessons can be scheduled at any time and are, therefore, purchased individually. We do not currently offer package rates.

During the scheduling process, we do our best to match students with an instructor based on availability, skill, and gender preferences when possible.

To request a Private Lesson, click here: https://www.digiquatics.com/accounts/5666/private_lessons/new. Please expect a few weeks of waiting before lessons start.

Fees for Private Lessons are as follows: (Members/Others)

Private Lesson: A 30 minute lesson with 1 student and 1 teacher. ($20 members/$30 others)

Semi-private Lesson: A 30 minute lesson with 2 students and 1 teacher. ($17 per individual for members/$25 others)

If you have more than 2 students who would like to participate, then Family Group Lessons would be the best option. Check out our group schedule to find our available times and register!

Diverse Abilities Adaptive Swim Lessons (DAASL)

This program puts an emphasis on identifying participant swim barriers so that every child can learn how to swim and be safe around water. With small participant to teacher ratios, participants get the individualized attention they need in a group setting. DAASL is a great opportunity for all children with diverse abilities to learn to swim while establishing a sense of friendship, achievement and belonging.

Once completed, please bring completed form with you on the first day of class.

*Form completion is voluntary; however, we highly encourage every participant to fill it out so that we can best serve your needs.
