CENTRAL YMCA WELCOMES D’AUNDRAY BROWN, SPORTS & RECREATION DIRECTOR

The Central YMCA’s leadership team is excited to welcome D’Aundray Brown as the new Sports & Recreation Director.  Mr. Brown was born and raised in Youngstown, and is a familiar face around the YMCA. He has been passionately involved in our sports leagues since his youth. For the past two years, Brown has volunteered at the Y, hosting clinics and basketball camps. As the Sports & Recreation Director, he will be leading Central’s long-standing Youth Basketball League Program, as well as expanding programs inside the Y, and in the community.

Central YMCA Executive Director, Shawn Armstrong shared his enthusiasm for D’Aundray when he said, “We are blessed to have D’Aundray join our Central Y family and bring all of his passion, skill, and experience in this role. I look forward to supporting him in his efforts to grow and refine our youth and adult sports programs and offerings.”

Echoing his excitement for his new endeavor, D’Aundray reflected on his years as a youth at the Y, “My experience at the YMCA has always been a positive one. The YMCA is the first place I learned to play organized basketball. It taught me the value of not only teamwork but also how to navigate new challenges on the court. Most importantly, how powerful a positive influence from a coach or mentor can change a kid’s life. It also taught me the power of sports, what it can teach you, and all the places it can take you.” Brown’s experiences growing up in the Y influenced his life and career from playing basketball at Ursuline High School to earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Sports Management at Cleveland State University.  Brown’s athletic talent in college was noticed by the Cleveland Cavaliers. In 2012 he was signed by the organization and played in the NBA D League (now called NBA G League) with the Canton Charge.

Four years ago Brown founded the DreDay Foundation32 to positively affect the lives of children and families. His foundation led basketball camps and clinics alongside the Cavs Academy Youth Sports. Brown expressed “I am looking forward to bringing my organizational knowledge and experience in the basketball world to the YMCA youth. I am committed to serving as a positive influence, mentor, and coach on the playing fields and in the community.”

SPECIAL EVENTS

Camp Fitch YMCA Polar Bear Plunge

Cost should never be the reason a child cannot attend Camp Fitch YMCA. To turn that mission into reality, Camp Fitch has hosted their annual Polar Bear Plunge for the last 15 years! Staff, alumni, campers, and anyone else who wants to join the cause jump into the icy waters of Lake Erie with the same purpose: to give the life-changing opportunity of camp to kids who would otherwise be unable to afford. All are welcome to join the fun (without any pressure to jump in Lake Erie)! We will have food, games, and raffles for everyone to participate in.

Davis Family YMCA Golf Outing

The Davis Family YMCA is committed to strengthening the foundations of our community. For 13 years we have hosted the annual golf outing, raising funds to ensure that YMCA programs and membership opportunities are accessible for all, regardless of financial means. Whether you’re a seasoned golfer or trying it for the first time, this event is a hole-in-one for fun, fellowship, and community impact! Swing by for a day of golf, great company, and the chance to support the charitable work of the YMCA of Youngstown.

Central YMCA Gala

The event will take place on September 25, 2025, from 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM at the Maronite Center. Please wear your semi-formal evening attire that reflects the elegance of the occasion and the spirit of connection we nurture at the Y.
