SPLASH AND DASH
SPLASH AND DASH
What’s a Splash and Dash?
The YMCA’s Splash & Dash is a multi-sport event for the youngest athletes in your family. Children ages 5-12 experience a two stage event (swim and run) with distances based on their age and capability. It’s a timed event, but there are no awards for winning a heat or an age category; just an opportunity to build confidence, experience a feeling of accomplishment, and create stronger family bond as they’re supported and encouraged from the edge of the pool or sidewalk.
When and where is it?
The Splash & Dash will take place on Saturday, June 10, with the first heat starting at 8:30 am. The entire event is safely contained on the YMCA property using the outdoor pool and outdoor running track.
How does the swim portion work?
All children must pass a swim test prior to the event. Members can do this at any time by requesting an opportunity with the lifeguard during each hour’s pool break. Those who have already passed the test this year do not need to take it again. Non-members can take the test prior to the start of the event beginning at 8 am on June 10. Those passing the swim test will be given a green wristband at packet pickup on race morning. Those not passing the deep- water swim test must wear a coast guard approved vest during their swim portion. No exceptions.
My child didn’t pass the swim test. Can they still participate?
Those not passing the deep water swim test must wear a coast guard approved
vest during their swim portion. No exceptions.
What are the age groups and distances the children swim and run?
The age groups are in two-year increments. They will be placed in heats with children of similar ages. Age groups are 5-6, 7-8, 9-10, and 11-12 years. Distances for the swim are 25, 50, 75, and 100 yards respectively (25 yards is one length of the pool; 50 yards is one lap). The running lengths are not quite as exact, but they’ll run about a 1/4 mile, 1/2 mile, 3/4 mile, and 1 mile respectively. Everyone finishes at the same spot.
What else is included with my registration?
Besides the event itself, registered participants receive a race shirt, goodie bag,
a coupon for a picnic lunch, and an opportunity for their family to join them for
a swim at the outdoor pool at 11 am.
