SWIM LESSONS at the YMCA of Youngstown

Youngstown Area Swim Lessons

The YMCA has been teaching swim lessons for over 100 years. Although many other agencies and organizations offer swim lessons, the difference is this: The Y uses programs as a vehicle to deliver its mission, which is to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build a healthy spirit, mind, and body for all. The YMCA swim lesson program is designed to ensure students’ safety, provide students with regular, progressive success, and make the learning process enjoyable.

The YMCA Swim Lesson program uses a lot of group practice, which gives participants more swim time (and less time waiting for a turn). Our program also includes a lot of games and activities, which have been designed to allow students to practice the skills they are learning while having fun at the same time. Swim lessons at the Y are available for ages 6 months through adults (children under the age of 3 must have a parent or guardian in the water with them during class). Private & Semi-Private Swim Lessons

In addition to group lessons, we offer private and semi-private swim lessons. These lessons are ideal for participants who need more one-on-one support or have a specific goal they’d like to accomplish.

Lessons can be scheduled at any time and are, therefore, purchased individually. We do not currently offer package rates.

During the scheduling process, we do our best to match students with an instructor based on availability, skill, and gender preferences when possible.

Homeschool Gym & Swim

Gym & Swim classes are available during the school day for students K-12 enrolled in school at home. Students receive a 40-minute gym class and a 40-minute swim lesson.
    • Gym class activities are age-appropriate and range from obstacle courses and games to sports and fitness class routines.
    • During swim lessons, students are grouped by ability and learn personal safety, rescue skills, and stroke mechanics through conditioning exercises and games.

Diverse Abilities Adaptive Swim Lessons (DAASL)

This program puts an emphasis on identifying participant swim barriers so that every child can learn how to swim and be safe around water. With small participant to teacher ratios, participants get the individualized attention they need in a group setting. DAASL is a great opportunity for all children with diverse abilities to learn to swim while establishing a sense of friendship, achievement and belonging. Click the links above for class times or to register.

Please click here to download our student intake form.*

Once completed, please bring completed form with you on the first day of class.

*Form completion is voluntary; however, we highly encourage every participant to fill it out so that we can best serve your needs.

SPECIAL EVENTS

Camp Fitch YMCA Polar Bear Plunge

Cost should never be the reason a child cannot attend Camp Fitch YMCA. To turn that mission into reality, Camp Fitch has hosted their annual Polar Bear Plunge for the last 15 years! Staff, alumni, campers, and anyone else who wants to join the cause jump into the icy waters of Lake Erie with the same purpose: to give the life-changing opportunity of camp to kids who would otherwise be unable to afford. All are welcome to join the fun (without any pressure to jump in Lake Erie)! We will have food, games, and raffles for everyone to participate in.

Davis Family YMCA Golf Outing

The Davis Family YMCA is committed to strengthening the foundations of our community. For 13 years we have hosted the annual golf outing, raising funds to ensure that YMCA programs and membership opportunities are accessible for all, regardless of financial means. Whether you’re a seasoned golfer or trying it for the first time, this event is a hole-in-one for fun, fellowship, and community impact! Swing by for a day of golf, great company, and the chance to support the charitable work of the YMCA of Youngstown.

Central YMCA Gala

Join us for the First Annual Central Gala, where we’ll come together to celebrate the impact we’re making in our community. The theme for this year’s event, A Better Future Starts with You, will highlight the YMCA’s ongoing mission to strengthen our community through programs that promote healthy living, youth development, and social responsibility. The event will take place on September 25, 2025, from 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM at the Maronite Center. Please wear your semi-formal evening attire that reflects the elegance of the occasion and the spirit of connection we nurture at the Y. This is a chance to make a lasting difference while enjoying an evening filled with hope, impact, and inspiration. We look forward to sharing this experience with you!
